ECUADOR. 8 Escudos, 1856-QUITO GJ. Quito Mint. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. KM-34.2; Onza-1776. One-year type. A VERY SCARCE issue with a slightly different portrait than the preceding Bolivar types. When we sold this piece as part of the Eliasberg Collection over a decade ago, we described it as "lustrous pale gold with deep orange at the rims," and that toning remains just as lovely today. The strike, often abysmal on this issue, does display areas of softness, but the portrait of Bolivar, deemed by most as the focal point of the coin, is more than acceptable. Also notable is a thin planchet crack that runs from the obverse rim to the point of the bust, aligning on the reverse to the wing left of the condor. Altogether, a solid representative, worthy of inclusion in an advanced collection of Latin American onzas.
