GUATEMALA. 8 Escudos, 1778-NG P. Nueva Guatemala Mint. Charles III. NGC AU-50. KM-40; Onza-669 ("rarisima"). Large Date variety. EXTREMELY RARE quality for the date, with minimal marks and an essence of antiqued originality that imparts immense charm over the surfaces. For the date, the strike also borders on finest seen, with most survivors showing areas of unevenness in the strike that translate to patches of softness in either Charles IIIs bust or the reverse shield. Without such issues, the present piece can certainly be considered among the finest known, as no examples seen or certified have been worthy of the Mint State qualification. A monumental opportunity for the collector as such, as appearances of the date are seldom to begin with, but offerings comparable to the present coin may come once-in-a-generation. From the Oro del Nuevo Mundo Collection.
