Three parts bound into two volumes. Fine.14.75 x 10.25 inches. Matching bindings in one-quarter vellum with marbled boards. Spine labels in black and brown, both lettered in gilt. Page edges finished with a light yellow tint, but not gilt. Volume I contains the title page of the original 1781 edition, a brief introduction and then the 107 full-page engraved plates. Tiny wormholes inside the front cover, but mostly clean through the interior. Many pages are bright, while others have toned as is apparently typical of this book. Tiny bookplate of C.E. Rappaport, Rome, inside the front cover. Volume II includes the main text body of the first edition, numbering 103 pages. This is followed by the first <em>Auctarium</em>, or basically a supplement, published with a similar title page, in 1789. Nine engraved plates and 20 pages of text. Following this section is the <em>Auctarium Secundum</em>, or second supplement, published in 1791, completing the work. There are nine plates and 15 text pages in this supplement. This volume is preserved similarly to the first, though a tear from the joint through one signature was repaired long ago. This affects pages 25 through 32. Similar small wormholes in the inside front cover, but fairly clean otherwise with good integrity to both bindings. As presented in the 2009 Kolbe sale where this work last appeared, Gabrielo L. Castelli was “one of the greatest collectors of the Greek coins of Southern Italy and the present catalogue was for a long time a major contribution to their study.” About Castelli, Dr. Bassoli offered that he is “still well-respected in the field of Sicilian archaeology and classical numismatics…,” and that this book is “held in especially high regard.” These are remarkable statements, more than two centuries after his passing.
