1800 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-192, B-19a. Rarity-2. AMERICAI. EF Details--Cleaned (PCGS). Ample luster remains on both sides, overall bold detail and attractive retoning in iridescent olive-orange patina further enhancing this coins appearance. Wispy hairlines and a touch of glossiness to the texture explain the PCGS qualifier, although there are few singularly mentionable marks, and both the quality and eye appeal are above average for the assigned grade. The obverse die of this variety was only used in this pairing, while the reverse, with its diagnostic die scratch, was used twice. All known examples from this reverse die show this strong die scratch after the final letter A in AMERICA, which has the appearance of an errant I at the end of that word, hence the AMERICAI designation. The variety itself is not particularly rare in an absolute sense, but has long been popular with both early dollar specialists and more generalized collectors, especially given its listing in the popular Guide Book.
