Undated (1907) Large Galvano of the Reverse of Brenners Carl Schurz Memorial Plaquette. Silvered Bronze. Extremely Fine. 11 1/4 X 8 inches for the galvano itself, 20 X 16 inches when the oak frame is included. Two semi-nude male youths walking right, one with his left arm raised, his right around the others waist. Rising sun on the edge at right center. Brenners signature at the upper left. The image represents America leading the immigrant onward. The other side of the original plaquette, not represented here, had a bust of Carl Schurz, German-born journalist and noted abolitionist who emigrated here as a youth. Issued in 1907 to commemorate Schurzs accomplishments, this obscure Brenner design is quite elusive in any format. From the Richard Jewell Collection.
