Circa 1830 C. Wolfe, Spies & Clark token. Musante GW-120, Baker-589, Rulau-E NY 962A. Brass. Reeded Edge. VF Details—Scratched (PCGS).25.9 mm. 119.4 grains. Attractive light golden brass with just a trace of deeper toning in some letters of the legends, but mostly quite uniform. Some old scratches are seen around the portraits on both sides, which is curiously an often seen treatment on these rare tokens. A trace of red ink on edge, as that used to apply the Baker numbers to other medals in this sale. The Musante plate piece.<p>This die pairing is the fourth in emission sequence of the specimens offered in this sale, as explained under GW-118 above. On this type, the reverse once again uses JACKSON as the identifier of the President. Clearly this piece was struck during his administration, apparently late enough that anyone who saw this token in circulation would not need clarification that he was the sitting President.Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
