1859 Hodges’ Genuine Bank Notes of America. Original Cloth. Very Fine.An important work and extremely rare. The Ford Library pedigree and condition is significant. This has been recognized as an important work by currency scholars for a long time. The quality is typical of most detectors that originated from the Ford Library and is exceptionally appealing.

Titles and Specifications: Hodges, J. Tyler. Hodges Genuine Bank Notes of America. The Only Original and Correct Work Ever Published, Except the Bank Note Safe-Guard, Giving Plain, Succinct, and Reliable Descriptions of Every Genuine Bank Note of Every Denomination on Every Bank in the United States & Canada. A Valuable Detector of Spurious, Altered, and Counterfeit Money, Compiled Carefully from Original Sources, Arranged and Published for the Use of, and Sent without Charge, to the Subscribers of Hodges Journal of Finance and Bank Reporter. New-York, 1859. Quarto, 29.5cm by 22.5 cm. Original blind stamped decorative russet cloth, gilt titles with "PRICE 50 CENTS." 39, (1) pages. Outer page edges trimmed as issued to provide tabs for the issues of the various states within. Very distinctive style and content. Ford monogram bookplate inside front cover; penciled Ford code front flyleaf.

Notes: This 1859 Hodges publication has a different title and format than the other Hodges volumes from the period. However, it was not published in lieu of the 1859 Hodges (Sullivan Type H and Type I; Type I which is included in this sale) as discussed in the Newman Part XI sale description. Only three have appeared at public sale to out knowledge. The Eric P. Newman library copy was inferior condition. The third confirmed copy was also MJS library, acquired from a Heritage auction January 2014. Rebound by MJS and subsequently sold in a 2016 Charles Davis auction. Not listed in Sigler, the American Numismatic Society Dictionary Catalogue, nor present in the Fuld, Champa, or Bass sales. Very Fine or nearly so. Some petty sunning observed and a few tiny chips off the front cover at the upper right. Ex: Kolbe & Fanning 2012 New York Sale, January 7, 2012, lot 299; previously Stacks-Kolbe Ford Library Part 1: Lot 589 where it realized $1,035. A museum caliber volume with many desirable traits to recommend it. A key piece from this MJS Part 2 selection.
