T-35. Confederate Currency. 1861 $5. PMG Very Fine 20.PF-1. No. 4964. Plate Ab. One of the most iconic and rare types in collectible currency of the Confederate States of America. One of the "Big Six" notes to find and usually one of the last holes remaining in a Confederate type set under construction. These 1861 $5 notes were produced by Hoyer & Ludwig. They were printed on eight note sheets with four notes being T-35s and four notes being Ab plate T-27 1861 $10s. Just 7,160 notes were issued for the type. Today around 140 are known to exist. It is unknown exactly why so few notes were emitted given the time and effort that would have gone into preparing the plate. Most speculate that the plate must have failed and it was easier to move to a new design rather than to prepare another plate. These notes came on poor quality paper and many T-35s are plagued by impairments resulting from heavy wear. Very pleasing printing and detail throughout with just some faint mounting remnants observed and mentioned by PMG as "Previously Mounted," in the comments section of the holder. From the Wealth of the South Collection.
