Galena, Illinois. Bank of Galena. ND (18xx). $1-$1-$2-$5. Extremely Fine.(IL-280 G2a-G2a-G4a-G6a) Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. New York & Phila. This is the first sheet we have handled from the Bank of Galena. This bank operated from 1852 until the 1860s when it closed. The $1-$1-$2-$5 sheet offered here is printed in black with each note featuring a red printed protector that spells out the denomination. The $1s are seen with cattle at center and Benjamin Franklin at left. The $2 displays a train vignette at center and a female portrait at right. A woman is seated with wheat and cotton near center on the $5 while a female portrait is at left and a portrait of Daniel Webster is at right. We can only trace offerings of the $1 denomination in the last 10 years. The paper is crisp with some light folds near center. Some tears are seen in the top left corner and at the left edge.
