Marseilles, Illinois. $5 1875. Fr. 401. The First NB. Charter #1852. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.This institution was chartered on July 28, 1871, with a capital of $50,000. The first president was Joseph W. Dow and the first cashier was William C. Tillson. The bank continued business for years afterward and then on March 31, 1933, was placed into conservator-ship, then on October 27 into receivership, a victim of the Depression as were so many banks during this unfortunate time. The note itself is stunning, displaying incredibly deep inks both front and back. The signatures are bold and the overall eye appeal is just down right impressive. While a small run of high grade $5 originals are known, this is the finest and only $5 1875 reported.
