Orland, California. $5 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 603. The First NB. Charter #10378. PMG Very Fine 30.California collectors will be eager at this bidding opportunity as Orland notes are simply rare. The town was home to just this issuing bank and prior to this new addition to the census just four collectible pieces were recorded. All of that quartet are 1902 series plain backs; that toal is split between two of fives and two tens. This Five Dollar offering is a stunning circulated piece and shows exceptional detail and quality for the assigned grade. Nicely embossed overprints are still observed and it seems just a touch of very light foxing negated an "EPQ" designation from PMG. The last to sell publicly of the other four large-size was a Very Good graded $10 note which brought $1,495 in a March 2010 sale. This bright Very Fine should certainly fetch considerably more.
