Friedberg 233 (W-70). 1899 $1 Silver Certificate. PCGS Currency Gem New 65 PPQ. Serial Number 1.Offered is an impressive serial number 1 example of this iconic American design type. The Series of 1899 $1 Silver Certificates are known as "Black Eagle" notes due to the bold portrayal of our national bird at center on the face. The engraving is officially titled Eagle of the Capitol and was earlier used on $10 Interest Bearing Notes and $10 Compound Interest Notes. Small portraits of Lincoln and Grant flank SILVER CERTIFICATE at bottom center. A bold blue overprint is featured with a large 1 counter at left and scalloped Treasury Seal at right. This particular example displays bold blue serial number D1A sharply at the lower left and upper right.

This exceptionally well printed ace displays bold inks that are nicely framed by large even margins. The paper is beautifully original and well deserving of PCGS Currencys PPQ designation. This note was encapsulated in a PMG holder with a grade of Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ when it last sold for $51,750 in September 2006. Just about a dozen serial number 1 Black Eagles are known for all catalog numbers combined. Few if any will match this example in terms of aesthetic appeal.

PCGS Population: 156, 168 finer.From James M.
