Proof.A portrait of General Winfield Scott, nicknamed "Old Fuss and Feathers," facing to the viewers left, is at the center, flanked by large "C" counters to each side, "C" at the upper left and right corners, and "100" at the lower left and right corners. Scott, a hero of the War of 1812, also distinguished himself in the War with Mexico, after which he was designated as lieutenant general, the first person to attain that rank since George Washington. In 1852 he ran for the presidency, but lost to Franklin Pierce.<p><p>This proof was produced by American Bank Note Company and bears an issue date of August 19, 1861. Five coupons are attached at right. Issued examples of this note bore interest at a rate of 7.3% per annum and were payable semi-annually. The notes reached maturity after three years. This is the only known example of the type in intact proof or issued form. A couple of small fragments of issued examples are known. The plate impression is exceptional with vibrant green overprint inks noted. It is visually impressive and a necessary item for collectors seeking a representative of all Friedberg numbers.<p><strong>PCGS Population: </strong>1, none finer.
