Friedberg 48 (W-316). 1878 $2 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Choice New 63 PPQ.Series of 1878 $2 Legal Tender Notes comprised a short lived series of notes sandwiched between the 1875 and 1880 issues. Evidence suggests the new Series of 1878 Allison-Gilfillan plates were being made simultaneously with Series of 1880 Scofield-Gilfillan plates. Just 4,576,000 Fr.48 (W-316) notes were printed and issued. The type has an ornate red overprint including a floral lined ornamental protector at the lower right and a spiked Treasury Seal to the lower left of center. The portrait of Thomas Jefferson was engraved by Charles Burt. The scene of the Capitol at center was accomplished by Louis Delnoce and William Chorlton. This beautifully original note provides a more affordable opportunity for collectors who desire to add a note with the Anderson pedigree to their holdings.<p><p>The Legal Tender Notes, Series of 1878 have the Treasury seal (small red with scalloped border) at the left. The large pink ornament is no longer present. The backs are imprinted the same as the Series of 1875 notes. Evidence suggests that new Series 1878 Allison-Gilfillan The Series of 1878 notes were using up the last of the old Willcox Company security paper with the distributed fibers and a blue tine band, while the Series of 1880 notes were introducing the new Crane Company paper having two horizontal threads completely across the note, plus a sprinkling throughout of short blue and red fibers.
