PCGS Currency Gem New 66 PPQ.The $5 Legal Tender Notes of the Series of 1878 are represented by just a single catalog number, Fr.69 (W-655), as seen here. Engraved signatures of Treasury officials Allison and Gilfillan are seen near the bottom border. The vignette Pioneer Family, engraved by Henry Gugler, is found at center. This type is commonly known by the "Woodchopper" nickname for the scene of a pioneer man holding an ax standing by a fallen tree with his family. "Old Hickory" Andrew Jackson is seen at left as engraved by Alfred Sealey. This catalog number displays at right an ornate red scalloped ornamental counter with a large Roman numeral V in the center as well as a red spiked Treasury Seal to the left of the central vignette. The green printed back has imprints of both the Columbian Bank Note Company and the BEP. This plate D example is amply margined and darkly printed. The paper is choice and displays natural paper wave.<p><p>The "Woodchopper" Pioneer Family motif is one of the most numismatically popular 19th century types.
