Fr. 190b (W-1236). 1864 $10 6% Three Year Compound Interest Treasury Note. Hessler X140A. PCGS Currency Very Fine 25.The Fr.190b $10 has always been a popular large size type note because it is the most available from the Compound Interest Treasury series and is perfect to represent the type. Not often found in superior grades, this example is wholesome with sharp color for the grade on both sides. John Herzog collected Civil War era circulating Treasury Notes alongside his larger size registered and coupon bonds. This circulating issue had no coupons, but paid 6% interest twice per year. Besides the Friedberg listing, these are listed in Hesslers "Illustrated Bonds" 1988 edition. The face plate adapted from the Act of March 3, 1863 notes plate. "Eagle of the Capitol" in center. Salmon P. Chase at lower left and Peace in oval at lower right. Face bronze overprint (like fractional currency) and red Dec. 15, 1864 date. Green back with interest payment schedule. Plate D. No. 30099. There are about 100 known and verified, but this is always a popular, representative denomination for the series and type. It is number 67 in the Sundman and Bowers 100 Greatest American Currency Notes reference. PCGS comments are "Restorations; Small Edge Tears." Described as VG-Fine by Oakes in 1977. This realized $1,210 the last time it was sold in 1990. This has a nice pedigree and will fit into many type sets well.
From the John E. Herzog Collection; 1990 Memphis Sale #89 (NASCA division of R.M. Smythe & Co. June 15-16, 1990, lot 3446); previously 1977 Oakes Fixed Price List.
