Fr. 198. (W-2650) Act of March 3, 1863. $50 5% One Year Note. Face Essay. PCGS Currency About New 53.This is an unusual piece, printed from the $50 Interest Bearing 5% One Year Note type, but on special olive bond paper with security lathe across the face. Design as the Proof. Loyalty at the left and Hamilton at the lower right. There is no date space at the upper right and the signatures are engraved onto this plate. Hessler placed this prior to the $50 Face Proof, but it plausible to say this is a parallel or later type. Hessler Proofs ITE8 (p66). Plate B. PCGS notes: "Repairs; Design Redrawn." Penciled Glenn Jackson pedigree mark on the blank back. Attractive overall. This was last sold in the 1990 Memphis Glenn Jackson sale for $1,375. There was an example in Stacks 2000 Americana sale which realized $3,730.50. The record price appears to be for the example sold by Lyn Knight in the 2000 Memphis sale for $9,200. There are perhaps eight or so known.<p>From the John E. Herzog Collection; 1990 Memphis Sale #89 (NASCA division of R.M. Smythe & Co. June 15-16, 1990, lot 3216); Dr. Glenn Jackson Estate.
