Fr. 191a (W-1953). 1864 $20 6% Three Year Compound Interest Treasury Note. Hessler X140B. PCGS Currency Very Fine 30.A second Compound Interest Treasury denomination from the Herzog Collection displaying vibrant color and broad margins. Another very sensibly designed and engraved financial instrument. Date late in the war, the vignettes complement each other well. Left with Victory. Bottom center is Mortar Firing. Right end is Lincoln by Henry Gugler. Face bronze overprint (like fractional currency) and red Dec. 15, 1864 date. Green back with interest payment schedule. Plate A. No. 226627. There are fewer than 62 examples confirmed in all grades, most being redeemed. PCGS comments: "Upper Right Corner tip Replaced; Small Edge Tears." These are typical on this type, which often is seen with more flaws. More than compensating are the broad margins on all sides, the vibrant bronze overprint on the face, and overall clarity of the example. Superior appearance for the technical grade. A perfect representative of the type and grade. From the John E. Herzog Collection.
