Fr. 63a. 1863 $5 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Superb Gem New 67 PPQ.All notes from the 1862-63 series are rare in Gem grades and practically unheard of at the Superb Gem New level. The Five Dollar denomination is virtually the only way to obtain these early Legal Tender Notes at the upper end of the grading scale. For both major services combined there are the following Superb Gem graded notes for the 1862-63 series Legal Tenders; $1(x3); $2, none; $5(x6); $10 and higher denominations, none. The American Bank Note Company and National Bank Note Company had their hand in producing these elegant notes and when every ounce of detail is present, such as in this notes case, the appeal is breathtaking. Perfectly original paper surfaces are easily detected through the encapsulation surface and large and even borders from the face and back impressions exceptionally well. The last certified at this level for the catalog number was in our 2015 ANA sale and brought $23,500. We would expect a similar realization tonight.
