Fr. 211 (W-Xxxx). Act of July 17, 1861. $5000 7.30% Three Year Note. Hessler X129M. Face and Back Essay Color Proofs. PCGS Currency New 62.This a highly important and extremely rare Federal Proof. None are known issued, all were redeemed. We believe it is the finest known of the type and as complete proof pairing, especially desirable. This set originated in Europe and was last sold at Christies in 1990. It has since been a centerpiece of the Interest Bearing Notes in the Herzog Collection. It will join another important collection whose owner will certainly enjoy it immensely. Face and Back color Proofs on India paper, mounted to same card face above back, engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Co., New-York. Five coupons complete at the right with red 00000 serial numbers. Green guilloche across, upper left oblong die, and upper right counter surround. Top center, America as an Indian princess seated. Left end, Justice. The ornate green back with overlapped dies and coupon security die behind set of coupons. Hessler Proofs 1436 (p.88). Plate C face. Only very minor faults on this spectacular example. Last Heritage Auctions record was in 2005 for $32,200 for a Face Proof only. The example in the 2000 Stacks sale was a face only and impaired, and also missing two coupons. The Rasmussen Face Proof was complete with coupons and realized $11,000 in March 1997. That was 21 years ago. Petty comment from PCGS: "Small Stains on Back Proof," which is just some scattered foxing. This is destined to be a highlight in the next collection it enters. <p>From the John E. Herzog Collection; Christies New York Sale, November 30, 1990, lot 22.
