1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 12-I, W-6330. Rarity-4. Period After MASSACHUSETTS, Stout Indian. AU-55.,142.0 grains. Glossy, golden brown iridescence defines the obverse, the reverse is ruddy chestnut brown in slight contrast. The strike is quite sharp overall, though the peripheral legends on the obverse are a bit soft due to a planchet cutter lip and beveling at the rim running nearly the entire circumference of the obverse. A very thin and short scratch between U and S of MASSACHUSETTS hallmarks this coin, among the finest of a handful of AU quality survivors of a die marriage unknown in Mint State. In comparison, Norwebs was called EF-45 though it appears to be closer to AU-58, and Partricks sole 12-I was the About Uncirculated from the Ford sale, ex Ryder himself.,From the Michael Demling Collection of Massachusetts Cents. Earlier ex Robert Vlack; SLT Collection; Tony Terranova. A Richard Picker imprinted cotton liner accompanying this lot may indicate that it was purchased by Vlack from Picker. <p>,
