1844 Henry Clay. DeWitt-HC 1844-18. White metal. 37.0 mm. About Uncirculated Details—Whizzed (NGC).,Bold and brilliant surfaces with finely satin fields that are highly lustrous. Well struck on a thick flan. The Ford Collection example was pierced and had a markedly different appearance, that of an "original" impression. Sullivan notes that the April 1865 Levick sale includes mention that a copper piece offered therein was "the work of some enterprising person," leading Sullivan to question the date of manufacture. Comparison of this piece to that in Ford seems to answer the question, there being both originals and restrikes, as with other politicals of the period. The dies were heavily spalled or rusted by the time this impression was made, though we made no mention of such characteristics for the Ford piece. A bit bright but not unattractive, all things considered, and likely very rare.,From the Brian Dobbins Collection of American Political Tokens. Earlier ex Al Anderson, May 1984, lot B-3.,
