1844 Henry Clay. DeWitt-HC 1844-1. White metal. 51.2 mm. MS-61 (NGC).,Neatly pierced at 12:00, but with only trivial wear to the hole, which explains the nice condition. Smooth light pewter gray over most of the surface, with light prooflike outlines through the attractively accomplished reverse design. The fact that there is some wear to the hole suggests this is an original and not a restrike produced for collectors. An attractive medal with a bold portrait in high relief. One tiny rim anomaly and some minor handling marks. One of the largest struck medals of the 1844 campaigns.,From the Brian Dobbins Collection of American Political Tokens. Earlier ex Charles McSorley Collection, Part II, Presidential Coin and Antique, July 1998, lot 41.,
