1840 Martin Van Buren. DeWitt-MVB 1840-10, HT-800. Brass. Extremely Fine, pierced as typical.,Some old scratches on both sides are mostly light and largely concentrated around the suspension piercing. Glossy light olive surfaces have a few flecks of gilding still visible. Sharp detail and quite attractive overall. A rarity, called "R-8" by Rulau in his work on Hard Times tokens, where he includes no image and references "McSorley 35," this very piece. The Ford Collection contained a lovely Mint State example, but these are very rare. Even the formidable Dice-Hicks Collection of Hard Times tokens seems to have been missing this issue.,From the Brian Dobbins Collection of American Political Tokens. Earlier ex Charles McSorley Collection, Part II, Presidential Coin and Antique, July 1998, lot 35.,
