Kirtland, Ohio. Kirtland Safety Society Bank. February 16, 1837. $5. PMG Very Good 8 Net. Repaired.(OH-245 G8) Kirtland, Ohio was the headquarters of the Mormon church in 1831. In 1836 the Mormons decided to open a bank lead by Joseph Smith and other church members in late 1836. They were rejected of a bank charter by Ohio banking authorities, however they still issued notes starting in January of 1837. May of 1837 the bank refused to redeem these notes and by June of 1837 Smith ended his association with the bank. The bank would fail by November of 1837. This example is well worn but with still boldly printed inks and strong signatures. A small piece of paper has been added to the back bottom margin.
