1788 Machins Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 23-88A, W-8100. Rarity-2. GEORGIVS III, Group III. AU-50 (PCGS).;An unusually well produced and preserved example of this conditionally challenging type. Evenly toned in handsome copper brown patina, both sides and well centered on the planchet with all major design elements boldly to sharply defined. The surfaces appear a bit rough due to myriad minor flan flaws that are only distinguishable with the aid of a loupe. There are few abrasions or other blemishes of note, however, and the in hand appearance of this coin is uncommonly choice in a Machins Mills halfpenny irrespective of date or variety.;From the Antony Bettencourt Collection. Earlier ex Heritages Pittsburgh Signature Auction of October 2011, lot 3010.
