Considered the first of the American military campaign service medals, but not actually instituted until 40 years after the conflict, the Civil War Campaign medal was awarded to those surviving members of the United States military who had served during the Civil War (1861-1865), and had requested the medal. The present example was awarded to an Army veteran -- the Navy and Marines each had their own versions of the basic medal, and issued examples of all three types are quite scarce.;
