1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Heraldic Eagle. BB-115, B-31. Rarity-5. Pointed 9, Close Date. EF-45 (NGC).;Subtle apricot tones accent the high points across the otherwise pewter and slate-gray patina of this pleasing rarity. The surfaces are pleasantly smooth and untroubled, with just a single shallow mark along Libertys neck to be noted as the only mentionable blemish throughout. A characteristic softness is present to the reverse stars, though the devices are otherwise bold and well defined. The reverse cracks are now extensive and can be seen in nearly all areas, equivalent to BB Die State IV. Faint tinges of mint luster remain in the most protected regions like the eagles wing feathers and around the obverse stars, contributing to the overall delightful eye appeal.
The BB-115 marriage is among the scarcer varieties of the year, with as few as 175 examples known. The finest surviving examples of this variety seemingly top out at the AU-58 level, and EF-45 examples like the present piece fall nicely into the lower end of the condition census provided by Q. David Bowers in his 2013 Encyclopedia.
;From Heritages sale of January 2015, lot 524; Heritages sale of June 2015; lot 4051.
