1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Heraldic Eagle. BB-94, B-3. Rarity-5. Knob 9, 4 Vertical Lines. AU-53 (PCGS).;This is a challenging die pairing to obtain in high grade, and this example is the third finest behind two Choice Mint State pieces known. Toned in deep silver gray with some green and blue iridescence when examined under a light. The surfaces are much nicer than usually encountered, even for a high grade Draped Bust dollar, and there are no distracting adjustment marks or rim problems. The obverse die had been used to coin two previous die marriages (BB-92 and BB-93), and this is its final use with a crack developing to the top of the second star and lumps seen just above Libertys drapery line on her chest. The reverse die makes its first appearance on this die marriage, and went on to coin the BB-95 and BB-102 varieties of 1798 before failing. A specialists coin and one which should please any numismatist for its quality and visual appeal.;From our (Stacks) sale of January 1998, lot 1238 (as BB-92, B-4).
