1838 Classic Head Half Eagle. McCloskey-1. MS-63 (NGC).;This beautiful Choice Mint State 1838 half eagle offers razor sharp striking detail, vivid golden-orange patina and radiant satin luster. The 1838 is the final Philadelphia Mint issue in the brief Classic Head half eagle series and has the fourth lowest mintage for the type after the 1838-C, 1838-D and 1837. Although much scarcer than the 1834 and 1836, the 1838 is still readily obtainable in most grades. However, the typical survivor of the 286,588-piece mintage is a circulated coin grading EF or AU. Mint State coins of even marginal quality are elusive, while Choice examples in MS-63 and MS-64 are rare and represent the finest obtainable for most collectors. There are only a handful of Gems certified, all in PCGS MS-65, MS-65+ or MS-66. Expertly produced, carefully preserved and a delight to behold, this significant condition rarity belongs in an advanced gold cabinet.
