1808 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle. BD-3. Rarity-4. Normal 5D. AU-55 (PCGS).;A deep golden-honey glow saturates the complexion of this wonderful Choice AU half eagle. The surfaces exhibit impressive preservation throughout, offering just the slightest friction across the highest points and scattered, trivial ticks unworthy of individual mention. Luster remains virtually comprehensive and remarkably satiny, showcasing a resilience in select regions that rivals some Mint State examples. A pinpoint of planchet impurity resides above the eagles head on the reverse and will serve as a convenient identifier for tracing the provenance through future assemblages.

With as few at 100 examples remaining, the BD-3, Normal 5D variety is slightly more scarce than the BD-4, Wide 5D variety, though not quite as rare as the two known overdate varieties of the year. Harry W. Bass owned three examples of the BD-3 marriage, among which was the incredible Bartle:1112 specimen now certified MS-64 (PCGS). The present piece, while tenderly circulated, delivers similarly unwavering composure and truly delightful eye appeal throughout.
