1849/8 Liberty Seated Half Dime. V-1, FS-301. MS-67 (PCGS). CAC.;Offered is a gorgeous Superb Gem dime with iridescent powder blue and champagne-apricot peripheral toning around antique silver centers. This virtually pristine coin displays satiny luster and a bold strike and is sure to please. With 1,309,000 coins struck the 1849 is one of the more available Liberty Seated half dimes from the 1840s. Most survivors are circulated, however, and it is more challenging to collect in Mint State than others from its era such as the 1843, 1845 and 1847. There are several bold repunched dates and overdates for this issue making it even more attractive for specialists in Liberty Seated coinage. The 1849/8 offered here is one such variety. Its status as an overdate is controversial with the exact nature of the artifact east of the lower portion of the primary digit 9 a matter of debate. Some specialists consider it to be remnants of an 8, others an inverted 6, while others maintain that it is a 9. Regardless, this variety has long been popular with specialists and the present example one of the finest certified.
