A highly popular and intricately designed 1 Tael dated 1920, featuring Caishen, the God of Wealth at centre within a pleasing mix of blue and light green colours. The series of 1920 is slightly unusual in that both Tael and Dollar denomination notes were issued in 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100s denominations. In this auction, we are proud to present an offering of the 1, 5 and 10 Taels and Dollars specimens in the following lots. The iconic design of the God of Wealth first appeared in the series of 1920 and remained the central design element until the last series of 1932. The God of Wealth is obviously an auspicious figure and the primary design element for banknotes from this issuer. This commercial bank started off as the Imperial Bank of China in May of 1897 and remained in operation until it was officially incorporated into the Peoples Bank of China in 1958.

NoFrom the Norman Lin Collection.
