(t) CHINA. Dollar, ND (1916). Tientsin Mint. Hung-hsien (Hongxian [Yuan Shih-kai]). PCGS MS-63. (t)This lot was manufactured in China (including Hong Kong), Russia or Republic of Belarus and was sourced from outside the United States for this auction after tariffs were enacted by the United States. Boasting a level of preservation not often encountered for the type, this immensely impressive flying dragon Dollar of Yuan Shih-kai as the Hung-hsien Emperor displays a very deep level of cabinet toning, especially across its obverse. Hues of burnt sienna highlight the devices, while notes of champagne and olive grace portions of the fields. Meanwhile, the darkest of cobalts is present at the peripheries, perfectly encapsulating the design. Just as impressive, the reverse features an engaging dragon that evokes aspects of the coinage of the still-recent Ching Dynasty. All in all, a breathtaking rendition of a VERY RARE coin, and one that is made that much more desirable on account of its numerous accolades.
