CARACALLA, A.D. 198-217. Judea, Neapolis. BI Tetradrachm (14.53 gms), ca. A.D. 215-217. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.Prieur-1316 var. Obverse: Laureate bust of Caracalla facing right; Reverse: Eagle standing facing, head left with wreath in beak, Altar between eagles legs and K above eagles head. Though historically attributed to Byblus by Prieur and others, new die-link research by Dr. Andreas Kropp suggests that this eagle on altar type is actually a product of Neapolis. According to Kropp, "the tetradrachm mint of Byblos, listed in all the standard references, probably never existed." Even so, this remains an exceptional example of the type with uniform sharpness and lovely silver-gray patina. <p>
