COLOMBIA. Estado Soberano de Panama. 3 Pesos, 18.5.1868. P-S188. DP 11872. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.An ever-popular issue for collectors of both Colombia and Panama that more often than not is encountered in cancelled form. This example of the 3 Pesos denomination is not only uncancelled, it is fully issued with a fairly early date for the type. For much of the 19th century what is now the country of Panama was a province of Colombia, but Panama finally gained its independence in 1903. A short-lived independent republic was declared in 1840-1841 by Tomás Herrara. While it failed, the quest for independence continued for the next sixty years. Herrara was in many ways heralded as a hero, and his portrait is seen on this note on the left side. A nice example with some minor tears that affect little. PMG Comments "Tears."From the Arauca Collection.
