CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Deutsch-Asiatische Bank. 5 Dollars, 1.3.1907. P-S294a. S/M#T101-2d. PMG Very Fine 20.Tientsin branch. An evenly circulated example of this scarce variety. Chinese chopmarks are seen on both sides but instead of being distracting appear to add some allure to this note and its history. The Tientsin branch of the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank is one of the scarcer banks to find in issued form, and not surprisingly, the present example is one of just two issued notes from this branch in the PMG population report as of the time of cataloging. The present example is the finest of that extremely limited number.Tientsin is today known as Tianjin. In the early 20th century, Tianjin became a significant economic center in northern China, benefiting from its strategic location as a key port city and gateway to Beijing. The city experienced rapid urbanization and modernization, with infrastructure improvements, the rise of industrial ventures, and thriving international trade. Its role as a commercial hub attracted both domestic and foreign investment, driving its economic growth during this period. An exceptional offering for the Chinese specialist not to be missed.
