Fr. 2404*. 1928 $50 Gold Certificate Star Note. PCGS Currency Gem New 65 PPQ.The closing days of 1933 saw the revocation of the right to legally possess U.S. Gold Certificates and the vast majority of these were surrendered to the Treasury. While all Gem quality Gold Certificates are moderately scarce today, this is especially true of the higher denominations and the replacement notes, which when these attributes are combined, become downright rare. In the case of the $50 denomination, we note that PMG has graded exactly one uncirculated example, that being a 63 EPQ. The T&P census shows two graded by PCGS Currency, this 65 PPQ note and a 63. This note is a wholly original Gem, with four equal margins that approach visual perfection, strong gold overprint, creamy white paper showing considerable wave, and loads of eye appeal. When this note first surfaced, in 2014, it realized $176,250 at public auction with fierce bidding. Easily one of the top small-size rarities to be had, and worthy of the attention we trust it will draw from the collecting community.<p>From the Mid-Continent Collection.
