MD-45. Maryland. January 1, 1767. $2. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.No. 11351. Signed by R. Couden and J. Clapham. Printed in Annapolis by Jonas Green. An exceptionally important historical note, as it constituted the earliest governmental use of the word "dollar" as an official unit of money. Further, it is interesting in that numerous different typeface fonts and sizes were employed to deter counterfeiting. The two small engravings of Spanish Dollars are the first use of coin illustrations on American paper money. What appears to be a cut-in margin at left is by design. Wide margins at top and bottom, with an extremely well-centered nature print on the back. Perfectly inked both front and back with superb quality paper. Not only is it PMGs highest-graded $2 note from the January 1767 issue, it is the only uncirculated example they have seen. Given the importance of this note, we expect it to generate considerable interest here. Ex. Newman. PMG Pop 1/None Finer. From the Mid-Continent Collection.
