1883 Liberty Seated Quarter. Proof-65 (PCGS).With richly original and attractive toning to expertly produced, carefully preserved surfaces. A popular date in the Motto Liberty Seated quarter series, the 1883 has a total mintage of only 15,439 pieces. Resources at the time were focused on Morgan dollar production, an effort greatly aided by the fact that commercial channels were still absorbing a backlog of previously hoarded coins that emerged from hiding after silver and paper currency reached parity in 1876. Fortunately, the Mint still produced enough Proofs during this era to satisfy collector demand, the 1883 quarter with a mintage of 1,039 examples in this format. Even so, in the finer grades, as here, this issue is scarce. Given the rarity of high grade Mint State 1883 quarters, the Millholland specimen will be eagerly sought by date collectors as well as those assembling Proof type sets.PCGS# 5584.
