1803 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-102a, T-2. Rarity-4-. Large 3, Small Reverse Stars. VF-30 (PCGS).This is a mostly silver-gray example, but one that also exhibits considerable iridescent outlining to the design elements. Isolated areas of striking incompleteness notwithstanding, this is a well defined and suitably bold early half dollar at the middle reaches of the numismatic grading scale. As with several other die pairings in the Draped Bust series, the 1803 O-102 is currently unknown in Mint State. The early die state is very rare (Herrman, Autumn 2022, says Rarity-6), but the O-102a state offered here is obtainable enough in circulated grades to be a suitable type candidate to represent the Heraldic Eagle design.
