1796 Liberty Cap Cent. S-89. Rarity-3. Fine, Environmental Damage.Well defined overall, the reverse is quite sharp, while the obverse is sufficiently bold. Warm golden-copper patina blankets both sides, the surfaces of which free of mentionable marks apart from a dull nick in the lower right obverse field. A shallow, minor flan flaw engages the obverse border at just past 12 oclock. Our qualifier concerns a layer of fine, chalky residue on both sides, as well as a couple of ancient carbon spots on the reverse at the ribbon ends. Scarce as an issue, and sure to find many eager buyers among first year type collectors as well as early copper enthusiasts. This lot includes NGC insert #4241677-003 with a grade of Fine-12 BN from a previous certification of this coin. The NGC insert also notes the provenance.PCGS# 1392.
