1923 United States Assay Commission Medal. By George T. Morgan. JK AC-67. Rarity-4. Bronze. MS-65 (NGC).51 mm. An uncommonly smooth and appealing example, with warm tan-gold patina on both sides. Fully struck with the handsome sandblast finish readily appreciable. Although Inaugurated on March 4, 1921, President Warren G. Harding would have to wait until 1923 to see his portrait on the obverse of the Assay Commission medal. He was preceded (during his presidency) in this series by his secretary of the Treasury Andrew W. Mellon, whose portrait is on the 1922 issue. JK AC-67 has one of the lower rarity rankings from its era in the Julian-Keusch reference, although this is only our fifth offering for the issue in the last dozen or so years. Finer than the Keusch Collection specimen from our (Stacks) November 2008 sale, this outstanding Gem will please even the most discerning collector.
