BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1617-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Juan Sanchez Mejia (M). Philip III. PCGS EF-40.KM-9; Cal-773. Weight: 13.45 gms. A RARE assayer. This choice cob has bright surfaces and is saturated with impressive detail. Not only are the mintmark and assayers initial fully visible on the obverse, but, owing to the rather broad flan, a portion of the legend appears on the left side of the rim as well. The reverse is more intriguing still, as it boldly displays the date nearly in its entirety. Most uniquely, the lions and castles appear to be oriented perpendicularly to each other around the reverse cross. The effect is that the lions appear to lie in a supine, almost fainting position relative to the castles. A fascinating and well-provenanced cob from the first year of dated issue. Sure to attract astute collectors. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here. From the Pat Johnson Collection.Ex: Kagins ANA Auction (8/1983) Lot # 1117.
