C / 12th REG / N.H.V. / ALEXANDRIA.<p>Russell Moore of Alexandria, New Hampshire was born in Hebron to Nathan and Sarah Moore on September 22, 1827, and enlisted August 20, 1862, as a sergeant. He mustered into C Company of the New Hampshire 12th Infantry in early September of that year. He was wounded on May 3, 1863, at Chancellorsville, and discharged for disability on September 25, 1863, at Concord, New Hampshire after being reduced in rank to private.<p>Moore had married Abby Jenness in December 1852, and after the War settled in Newbury, Vermont, where he operated a grist mill and later sold ice. He died in Newbury on April 17, 1902, in his 74th year.<p>The 12th Regiment of the New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry had a most distinguished record, displaying valor and sacrifice almost unequalled by any other regiment in the Union Army. Serving in the Army of the Potomac during much of 1863, and in the Army of the James throughout 1864 and 1865, the 12th saw action at many of the Wars most notable engagements, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, and the occupation of Richmond.
