France. 1792 Lyon Convention Medal. By Galle. Maz-318. Metal de Cloche. Specimen-64 (PCGS). An exceptionally nice example of this popular French medal, tied for finest certified by PCGS and far above the usual level of quality encountered. Deep golden brown surfaces are as smooth as ever seen on this issue, whose planchets were cast and all show some level of inherent granularity. This piece is even and appealing, with great color, superb surface, and outstanding detail. No marks or detractions are seen on either side. This medals obverse portrait was inspired by Dupres Libertas Americana, conceived just a decade before, thus giving it entry into cabinets in both France and the United States. Most are granular and mishandled, but this medal is absolutely lovely. From the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation.
