1781 (1783) Libertas Americana Medal. Original. Paris Mint. By Augustin Dupre. Adams-Bentley 15, Betts-615. Copper. Unc Details--Mount Removed (PCGS). Encapsulated with the top edge hidden, so any mount removal is not presently visible. Attractive light golden-brown with some evidence of handling. A trace of verdigris is noted among the details of Hercules; crib, some light scattered marks and lines are seen in the fields. A thin nearly vertical scratch is seen above the lion in the upper reverse field. The sharpness is superb on both sides, and the eye appeal is quite nearly a match. The long history of this medals ownership may be unknown to us, but beginning as it did with Franklin himself, it is undoubtedly historic and just as remarkable as any Gem quality specimen.
