1907 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-64 (NGC). CAC. A superior CAC-approved example with rich peach and apricot toning and strong satiny luster throughout. Well struck and particular smooth on the reverse, this is an outstanding Choice type candidate from the final year of Liberty Head double eagle production in the Philadelphia Mint.
With a few design changes (all on the reverse) the Liberty Head double eagle was minted from 1850 uninterrupted until 1907. The denomination was born from the need to process gold being mined from the California Gold Rush, it witnessed the bloody Civil War, the Industrial Age, and the turbulence of the financial panics of 1857, 1873, and 1893 and was stolen from banks by the likes of Jesse James and Billy the Kid. It is a reminder of the epic growth of the United States, and when placed in this historical context the idea of collecting Liberty Head double eagles is quite intriguing. The series is ripe with rarities and scarce dates, and makes for an exciting numismatic challenge. The present specimen from the Zito Collection offers an exceptional opportunity.
From the Dr. Paul and Rosalie Zito Collection. Acquired February 21, 1996.
