1879 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS). Brilliant apart from halos of steel-blue and pale pink peripheral iridescence, the obverse contrasts with a reverse that exhibits similar peripheral colors around a pinkish-gray center. Sharply struck with strong field to device contrast and uncommonly well preserved surfaces for a Proof Morgan dollar of any date. The Proof mintage for the year was 1,100 pieces, survivors of which appear on the market with regularity. Many have been cleaned or are otherwise confined to lower grades through Proof-64, however, and in properly graded Proof-65 this issue can be challenging to locate. A find for the astute bidder.
