1878 Morgan Silver Dollar. 8 Tailfeathers. MS-65 (PCGS). Dominant lime-gold and crimson toning overlays the obverse while golden, olive and steel gray colors are seen over the reverse. Both sides are equally well produced with a sharp strike and billowy mint luster. A coin for the collector of high grade Morgan dollars who also appreciates colorful toning.
In early 1878, the Morgan dollars were issued with eight tail feathers as part of the reverse design. Later in the year, this was changed to seven tailfeathers to better balance the design (one at the center flanked by three on each side). Three varieties featuring eight, seven, and eight over seven tailfeathers are known, only for 1878.
Selections from the Aberg Collection.
